ABSTRACT

Abstract The objective of the current study was to investigate the synergistic impact of -Tocopherol and -Linolenic acid (100 µM) on IVM and IVC of Nili Ravi buffalo oocytes. Oocytes were obtained from the ovaries of slaughtered buffaloes within two hours after slaughter and brought to laboratory. Buffalo cumulus oocyte complexes were placed randomly in the five experimental groups included; GROUP 1: Maturation media (MM) + 100 µM ALA (control), GROUP 2: MM + 100 µM ALA + 50M -Tocopherol, GROUP 3: MM + 100 µM ALA + 100M -Tocopherol, GROUP 4: MM + 100 µM ALA + 200 M -Tocopherol and GROUP 5: MM + 100 µM ALA + 300 M -Tocopherol under an atmosphere of 5% CO2 in air at 38.5 °C for 22-24 h. Cumulus expansion and nuclear maturation status was determined (Experiment 1). In experiment 2, oocytes were matured as in experiment 1. The matured oocytes were then fertilized in Tyrodes Albumin Lactate Pyruvate (TALP) medium for about 20 h and cultured in synthetic oviductal fluid (SOF) medium to determine effect of -Linolenic acid (100 µM) and -Tocopherol in IVM medium on IVC of presumptive zygotes. To study the effect of -Linolenic acid (100 µM) in IVM media and increasing concentration of -tocopherol in the culture media on early embryo development (Experiment 3), the presumptive zygotes were randomly distributed into the five experimental groups with increasing concentration of -tocopherol in culture media. Higher percentage of MII stage oocytes in experiment 1(65.2±2.0), embryos at morula stage in experiment 2 (30.4±1.5) and experiment 3 (22.2±2.0) were obtained. However, overall results for cumulus cell expansion, maturation of oocyte to MII stage and subsequent embryo development among treatments remain statistically similar (P > 0.05). Supplementation of -tocopherol in maturation media having -Linolenic acid and/or in embryo culture media did not further enhance in vitro maturation of oocyte or embryo production.


Resumo O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar o impacto sinérgico do -tocoferol e do ácido -linolênico (100 µM) na MIV e CIV de oócitos de búfala Nili Ravi. Os oócitos foram obtidos dos ovários de búfalos abatidos duas horas após o abate e levados ao laboratório. Complexos de oócitos cumulus de búfalo foram colocados aleatoriamente nos cinco grupos experimentais incluídos; GRUPO 1: Meio de maturação (MM) + 100 µM ALA (controle), GRUPO 2: MM + 100 µM ALA + 50 µM -tocoferol, GRUPO 3: MM + 100 µM ALA + 100 µM -tocoferol, GRUPO 4: MM + 100 µM ALA + 200 M -tocoferol e GRUPO 5: MM + 100 µM ALA + 300 M -tocoferol sob uma atmosfera de 5% de CO2 em ar a 38,5 °C por 22-24 h. A expansão cumulus e o estado de maturação nuclear foram determinados (Experimento 1). No experimento 2, os oócitos foram maturados como no experimento 1. Os oócitos maturados foram então fertilizados em meio de Tyrode's Albumina Lactato Piruvato (TALP) por cerca de 20 h e cultivados em meio de fluido oviductal sintético (SOF) para determinar o efeito do ácido -linolênico (100 µM) e -tocoferol em meio IVM em IVC de presumíveis zigotos. Para estudar o efeito do ácido -linolênico (100 µM) em meio IVM e aumentar a concentração de -tocoferol no meio de cultura no desenvolvimento inicial do embrião (Experimento 3), os presumíveis zigotos foram distribuídos aleatoriamente nos cinco grupos experimentais com concentração crescente de -tocoferol em meios de cultura. Maior porcentagem de oócitos em estágio MII no experimento 1 (65,2 ± 2,0), embriões em estágio de mórula no experimento 2 (30,4 ± 1,5) e experimento 3 (22,2 ± 2,0) foram obtidos. No entanto, os resultados gerais para a expansão das células do cumulus, maturação do oócito para o estágio MII e desenvolvimento embrionário subsequente entre os tratamentos permanecem estatisticamente semelhantes (P> 0,05). A suplementação de -tocoferol em meios de maturação com ácido -linolênico e / ou em meios de cultura de embriões não aumentou ainda mais a maturação in vitro de oócitos ou a produção de embriões.

SUMMARY: The present study was conducted to detect the differences in glycohistochemical features in the epididymal duct of the dromedary camel and the water buffalo. Epididymal sections (caput, corpus and cauda) from both species were stained with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) conjugated lectins. Binding sites for five lectins (DBA, GSA-1, HPA, PNA and WGA) have been found in both species. The binding sites of different lectins showed significant variations in the pattern of distribution in both a species. This included both species-specific and region-specific order. Additionally, only three (GSA-1, PNA and WGA) out the five lectins studied exhibited binding sites in all epididymal regions in both species. The other two lectins (DBA and HPA) followed the same order recorded for the other three (GSA-1, PNA and WGA) in buffalo, but failed to show any binding sites in cauda epididymis in camel. In conclusion, the variable regional and species-specific distribution features of lectins revealed that both species have diverse glycomic characteristics that may be related to their different reproductive patterns. However, the glycome-associated functional capacities remain obscured and need further profound investigations.


RESUMEN: El presente estudio se realizó para detectar las diferencias en las características glicohistoquímicas del conducto epididimal del dromedario y el búfalo de agua. Las secciones del epidídimo (cabeza, cuerpo y cola) de ambas especies se tiñeron con lectinas conjugadas con isotiocianato de fluoresceína (FITC). Se encontraron sitios de unión para cinco lectinas (DBA, GSA-1, HPA, PNA y WGA) en ambas especies. Los sitios de unión de diferentes lectinas mostraron variaciones significativas en el patrón de distribución en ambas especies. Esto incluía tanto el orden específico de la especie como el específico de la región. Además, solo tres (GSA-1, PNA y WGA) de las cinco lectinas estudiadas exhibieron sitios de unión en todas las regiones del epidídimo en ambas especies. Las otras dos lectinas (DBA y HPA) siguieron el mismo orden registrado para las tres restantes (GSA-1, PNA y WGA) en búfalos, pero no mostraron ningún sitio de union en la cola del epidídimo en camellos. En conclusión, las características de distribución regionales y específicas de especies variables de las lectinas revelaron que ambas especies tienen características glucómicas diversas que pueden estar relacionadas con sus diferentes patrones reproductivos. Sin embargo, las capacidades funcionales asociadas con el glicoma permanecen desconocidas y requieren mayor investigación.

Introducción: En Colombia, la producción bufalina viene creciendo de forma importante. Los búfalos se adaptan bien a zonas aluviales, que se caracterizan por la presencia de especies de gramíneas nativas, como Hymenachne amplexicaulis. Objetivo: Evaluar el efecto de diferentes tipos de suplementación sobre el desempeño productivo y comportamiento ingestivo de bucerros manejados en pasturas con predominio de Hymenachne amplexicaulis. Materiales y métodos: Treinta bucerros Murrah, con 67.5 (DE=2) kg de peso y 4 meses de edad, se asignaron, aleatoriamente, sí son tres tratamientos: SS: sin suplementación; SM: suplemento mineral y SM+C: suplemento mineral + balanceado (0.5% peso corporal). Los animales pastorearon en praderas con predominio de Hymenachne amplexicaulis, y en la noche recibieron el suplemento en corrales. Las variables estudiadas fueron la ganancia de peso y el tiempo destinado a realizar diferentes conductas de ingestión, además de las tasas de bocados y estaciones de alimentación. Resultados: El consumo diario de mezcla mineral fue de 33.8 g en los dos grupos suplementados, y el de balanceado de 149.3 g. La oferta de SM y de SM+C produjo un incremento extra en la ganancia de peso de 68 y de 227 g, respectivamente (p <0.001). Los animales suplementados presentaron mayor tiempo de pastoreo (p<0.001) y menor tiempo de rumia (p =0.001). La relación beneficio/costo, para los tratamientos SM y SM+C, fue de 4.2 y 4.3, respectivamente. Conclusión: Bajo las condiciones de estudio, las dos estrategias de suplementación evaluadas mejoraron el desempeño de los animales y presentaron viabilidad económica, en especial la oferta simultanea de mezcla mineral y de alimento balanceado.


Introduction: In Colombia, buffalo production has been growing significantly. Buffaloes adapt well to alluvial areas, which are characterized by the presence of native grass species, such as Hymenachne amplexicaulis. Objective: To evaluate the effect of different strategies of supplementation on the productive performance and ingestive behavior of calves managed in pastures with a predominance of Hymenachne amplexicaulis. Materials and methods: Thirty Murrah calves, weighing 67.5 (SD=2) kg and 4 months old, were randomly assigned to three treatments: SS: no supplementation; SM: mineral supplement and SM+C: mineral supplement + concentrate (0.5% body weight). The animals grazed in meadows with a predominance of Hymenachne amplexicaulis, and at night they received the supplement in pens. The variables studied were weight gain and time spent on different eating behaviors, in addition to biting rate and feeding stations. Results: The mineral mixture consumption was 33.8 g in the SM and SM+C groups, and the balanced consumption was 149.3 g. The supply of SM and SM+C produced an extra increase in weight gain of 68 and 227 g, respectively (p < 0.001). Supplemented animals grazed longer (p<0.001) and ruminated less time (p =0.001). The benefit/cost ratio for the SM and SM+C treatments was 4.2 and 4.3, respectively. Conclusion: Under the study conditions, the supplementation strategies evaluated improved the performance of the animals and presented economic viability, especially the simultaneous offer of mineral mix and balanced feed.

ABSTRACT

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is an important global public health issue. HEV infections are recognized as a zoonotic disease. Swine are believed to be the main reservoir of HEV. Recently, yaks, cows, and yellow cattle have been reported as new reservoirs of HEV. However, whether other species of cattle and buffaloes are sensitive to HEV infection is unknown. To investigate the prevalence of HEV infection in buffaloes, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse transcription-nested polymerase chain reaction (RT-nPCR) were performed. Only one buffalo was positive to anti-HEV IgM antibody (1/106, 0.94%), and none were positive for anti-HEV IgG antibody. To our surprise, five serum (5/106, 4.72%) and three milk samples (3/40, 7.50%) from buffaloes were positive to HEV RNA. All strains of HEV isolated from buffaloes belong to genotype 4. Results indicate that buffaloes may be a new reservoir of HEV.(AU)


Infecção com o vírus Hepatite E (HEV) é uma importante questão de saúde pública global. Infecções HEV são reconhecidas como doença zoológica. Acredita-se que suínos são o principal reservatório de HEV. Recentemente iaques, vacas, e gado amarelo foram reportados como novos reservatórios do HEV. Porém, não se sabe se outras espécies de gado e búfalo são sensíveis a infecção HEV. Para investigar a prevalência de infecção HEV em búfalos, foram realizados prova de imunoabsorção enzimática e polimerização em cadeia inversa ancorada em transcrição. Apenas um búfalo foi positivo para o anticorpo anti-HEV IgM (1/106, 0,94%), e nenhum foi positivo para o anticorpo anti-HEV IgG. Para nossa surpresa cinco (5/106, 4,72%) e três amostras de leite (3/40, 7,50%) de búfalos foram positivos para HEV RNA. Todas as estirpes de HEV isoladas de búfalos pertencem ao genótipo 4. Resultados indicam que búfalos podem ser um reservatório de HEV.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Resumen A nivel mundial el decomiso de vísceras rojas es una de las principales causas de pérdidas económicas en la comercialización de productos cárnicos. El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar las principales causas y variables epidemiológicas asociadas al decomiso de vísceras rojas en el FRIGORÍFICO RÍO FRÍO (FRF), del municipio de Floridablanca, Santander y estimar el valor de las pérdidas económicas asociadas a esta actividad. Entre 9 de noviembre al 9 de diciembre de 2018, se realizó un estudio transversal en el total de animales sacrificados en el FRF, a los cuales se les recolectó información epidemiológica posterior a la inspección sanitaria realizada por funcionarios del INVIMA. Las principales causas y variables epidemiológicas asociadas al decomiso de vísceras rojas se estimaron a partir de análisis de frecuencias, mientras el valor de las pérdidas económicas, a través de un análisis económico en el mercado nacional. Se sacrificaron un total de 8671 bovinos, y 226 búfalos, en los cuales se realizó el decomiso de vísceras rojas en el 15,8% y 26,5% de los animales, respectivamente. En los bovinos los principales órganos decomisados fueron pulmón, hígado y bazo con porcentajes del 87,4%, 11,1% y 0,6%, respectivamente. Mientras que, en los búfalos, fueron el pulmón, hígado y riñón con porcentajes del 88,3%, 8,3% y 1,7%, respectivamente. Las principales causas de decomiso de pulmón en ambas especies fueron la broncoaspiración (86,6%) y enfisema (9,4%), mientras para el hígado fueron los abscesos (40,5%) y la distomatosis hepática (28,8%) en los bovinos, hígado graso (80,0%) y cirrosis (20,0%) en los búfalos. Para el caso de los bovinos, hubo diferencias significativas en la proporción de animales con distomatosis hepática entre los diferentes municipios de Santander (χ² = 50.03, P < 0.05). Las mayores pérdidas económicas durante el periodo de estudio se deben al decomiso de pulmón e hígado con valores de 4886 y 2639 USD. En conclusión, el pulmón fue el órgano decomisado con mayor frecuencia en ambas especies, principalmente asociado a la broncoaspiración. Futuras estrategias de intervención, con el fin de reducir la broncoaspiración en los animales que ingresan a la planta de beneficio, e interrumpir el ciclo de vida de Fasciola hepatica en algunos municipios de Santander, son necesarios para disminuir el nivel de pérdidas económicas a lo largo de la cadena productiva.


Abstract Red viscera confiscation represents a significant cause of economic loss for the meat products' trade. This study was aimed at determining the causes and epidemiological variables associated with red viscera confiscation in a slaughterhouse (FRIGORÍFICO RÍO FRÍO (FRF)) located in Floridablanca, in Colombia's Santander department, and estimating the value of the economic losses associated with such confiscation. A cross-sectional study was carried out between November and December 2018 based on epidemiological information regarding all animals slaughtered at the FRF recorded after routine health inspection by Colombian Food and Drug Surveillance Institute (INVIMA) officials. Frequency analysis was used for estimating the main causes of and the epidemiological variables associated with red viscera confiscation whilst economic losses were estimated by national market analysis. It was found that red viscera were confiscated in 15.8% of 8,671 sacrificed cattle compared to 26.5% for 226 buffaloes. The lungs (87.4%), liver (11.1%) and spleen (0.6%) were the main organs seized for cattle and lungs (88.3%), liver (8.3%) and kidneys (1.7%) for buffaloes. Bronchoaspiration (86.6%) and emphysema (9.4%) were the main causes of confiscation regarding the lungs in both species while for the liver these were abscesses (40.5%) and hepatic dystomatosis (28.8%) in cattle and fatty liver (80.0%) and cirrhosis (20.0%) in buffaloes. There were significant differences regarding the percentage of cattle having hepatic dystomatosis amongst municipalities in the Santander department (χ²=50.03, p<0.05). Lung (4,886 USD) and liver confiscation (2,639 USD) led to the greatest economic losses; the lungs were the main organ confiscated in both species, mainly being associated with bronchoaspiration. Future intervention strategies are needed to reduce the livestock industry's financial losses, aimed at reducing bronchoaspiration in animals in the slaughterhouse and interrupting Fasciola hepatica's life-cycle in some municipalities in the Santander department.


Resumo Globalmente, os confiscos de órgãos e vísceras vermelhas é uma das principais causas de perdas econômicas na comercialização de produtos à base de carne. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar as principais causas e variáveis epidemiológicas associadas aos confiscos de vísceras vermelhas num frigorífico (FRIGORÍFICO RÍO FRÍO (FRF)), do município de Floridablanca, Santander, e estimar o valor das perdas econômicas associadas a esta atividade. Entre 9 de novembro e 9 de dezembro do 2018, foi realizado um estudo transversal sobre o total de animais abatidos no FRF, nos quais a informação epidemiológica era diligenciada depois da inspeção sanitária realizada pelos funcionários do INVIMA. As principais causas e variáveis epidemiológicas associadas ao confisco de vísceras vermelhas foram estimadas a partir da análise de freqüência, e o valor de perdas econômicas, através de uma análise no mercado nacional. Foram abatidos 8.671 bovinos e 226 búfalos, nos quais 15,8% e 26,5% tiveram confiscos de vísceras vermelhas, respectivamente. Em bovinos, as principais vísceras confiscadas, foram pulmões, fígado e baço com percentagens de 87,4%, 11,1% e 0,6%, respectivamente. Nos búfalos, foram pulmões, fígado e rim com porcentagens de 88,3%, 8,3% e 1,7%, respectivamente. Para as duas espécies, broncoaspiração (86,6%) e enfisema (9,4%) foram as principais causas de confiscos dos pulmões. Para o fígado, foram os abcessos (40,5%) e fasciolose (28,8%) em bois, esteatose hepática (80,0%) e cirrose (20,0%) em búfalos. No caso dos bois, houve diferenças significativas na proporção de animais com fasciolose nos diferentes municípios do Santander (χ² = 50,03, P <0,05). As maiores perdas econômicas durante o período de estudo correspondem ao confisco de pulmão e fígado com valores de 4886 e 2639 USD. Em conclusão, o pulmão foi a principal víscera confiscada em ambas espécies, principalmente associados a broncoaspiração. Estratégias futuras de intervenção, com o objetivo de reduzir a broncoaspiração, e interromper o ciclo de vida da Fasciola hepatica em alguns municípios do Santander são necessários para reduzir as perdas econômicas na cadeia de produção.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The genus Cotylophoron belongs to the Paramphistomidae family and its definitive hosts are ruminants in general. This work describes the presence of a new species of the gender, a parasite in the rumen and reticulum of Bubalus bubalis, on Marajó Island in the Eastern Brazilian Amazon, using of light microscopy, scanning electronic microscopy and molecular biology techniques. One hundred and ten animals were analyzed, of which 4.54% were parasitized by flukes in their adult forms. The helminths were found fixed to the ruminal mucosa and present Liorchis-type pharynx, Cotylophoron-type genital sucker, oblique testicles larger than the ovary, uterus in rings full of eggs and Cotylophoron-type acetabulum. These morphologic characters do not fit into any previously described species. Thus, it is proposed that this is a new species in the genus Cotylophoron. The present work expands the record of parasitism by helminths in Bubalus bubalis, this being the first record of trematoda from the genus Cotylophoron for this host in the Brazilian Amazon.


Resumo O gênero Cotylophoron pertence à família Paramphistomidae e possui como hospedeiros definitivos ruminantes em geral. Este trabalho descreve a presença de uma espécie nova do gênero, parasito do rúmen e retículo de Bubalus bubalis, na Ilha de Marajó, Amazônia oriental brasileira, a partir das técnicas de microscopia de luz, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e biologia molecular. Foram analisados 110 animais, dos quais 4,54% estavam parasitados por trematódeos na sua forma adulta. Os helmintos foram encontrados fixados à mucosa ruminal, apresentando faringe do tipo Liorchis, ventosa genital do tipo Cotylophoron, testículos oblíquos maiores que o ovário, útero em alças repleto de ovos, e acetábulo do tipo Cotylophoron. Estes caracteres morfológicos não se enquadram em nenhuma espécie previamente descrita. Assim, propõe-se uma nova espécie ao gênero Cotylophoron. O presente trabalho amplia o registro do parasitismo por helmintos em Bubalus bubalis, sendo este o primeiro registro de trematódeos do gênero Cotylophoron nesse hospedeiro para a Amazônia brasileira.

ABSTRACT

This study was aimed to determine and compare the chemical and microbiological properties of yoghurts made from different types of milk and their mixtures (35%, 65%, and 100%) during their storage at 4 °C for 28 days. For this purpose, chemical and microbiological properties of yoghurts during storage at 4 °C for 28 days were investigated. The total amount of dry matter, fat, pH and protein of yoghurt made from the buffalo and cow milk mixtures was significantly higher than that of pure buffalo milk (P<0.01). Also, storage time has led to significant differences in these components. Considering the results of microbiological analysis, a significant (P<0.01) difference was found between yoghurt samples in terms of total count of mesophilic aerobic bacteria, lactobacilli, lactococcus and yeast and mould. Hence, it is concluded that the addition of buffalo milk to that of cow improves the composition of yoghurt made from cow milk, which indicated the possibilities of processing and marketing of both types of milk especially because the health benefits of cow milk and the fermented products are well documented(AU)


El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar y comparar las propiedades químicas y microbiológicas de los yogures hechos con diferentes tipos de leche y sus mezclas (35%, 65% y 100%) durante su almacenamiento a 4° C por 28 días. La cantidad total de materia seca, grasa, pH y proteínas del yogur hecho con las mezclas de leche de búfala y vaca fue significativamente mayor que la de la leche de búfala pura (P <0.01). Además, el tiempo de almacenamiento generó diferencias significativas en estos componentes. De acuerdo con los resultados del análisis microbiológico, se encontró una diferencia significativa (P<0.01) entre las muestras de yogur en términos de bacterias mesófilas aerobias totales, lactobacilos, lactococcus y recuentos totales de levadura y mohos. Por lo tanto, se concluye que la adición de leche de búfala a la de vaca mejora la composición del yogur hecho de leche de vaca, lo que indica las posibilidades de procesamiento y comercialización de ambos tipos de leche, especialmente porque los beneficios para la salud de la leche de vaca y de los productos fermentados están bien documentados(AU)

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to classify and characterize the compositional quality of milk from river buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) and cows (Bos spp.) in Colombia based on the fat, protein, and total solid (TS) contents. Using a hierarchical procedure, data on milk from river buffaloes (n = 7,726) and cows (n = 49,330) were filtered and subjected to cluster analysis in order to generate three groups: Normal (N), High quality (HQ) and Poor Quality (PQ). The categorized database was then randomly separated into two sets (training and validation) and a discriminant analysis was applied. In total, 37.3% of river buffalo milk samples were classified as N (6.80% fat, 4.34% protein, and 16.80% TS), 13% as HQ (9.41% fat, 4.93% protein, and 19.50% TS), and 43.7% as PQ (3.95% fat, 3.92% protein, and 13.7% TS). In contrast, 41.8% of cow milk samples were classified as N (3.64% fat, 3.37% protein, 12.42% TS), 41.2% as PQ (2.71% fat, 3.08% protein, and 10.6% TS), and 16.9% as HQ (5.46% fat, 4.01% protein, and 14.82% TS). The discriminant models for both river buffalo and cow milk were able to classify milk in the N and PQ groups with >90% accuracy, and that in the HQ group with >85% accuracy.


RESUMEN El objetivo de este estudio fue caracterizar y clasificar la calidad composicional de la leche de búfala (Bubalus bubalis) y de vaca (Bos spp.) en Colombia con base en los contenidos de grasa, proteína y sólidos totales. Mediante un procedimiento jerárquico los datos de leche de búfalos de agua (n = 7,726) y vacas (n = 49,330) se filtraron y se sometieron a análisis de conglomerados para generar tres grupos: Normal (N), Alta calidad (HQ) y Calidad deficiente (PQ). La base de datos categorizada se separó aleatoriamente en dos conjuntos (entrenamiento y validación) y se aplicó un análisis discriminante. En total, 37,3% de las muestras de leche de búfalo de agua se clasificaron como N (6,80% de grasa, 4,34% de proteína y 16,80% de TS); 13% como HQ (9,41% de grasa, 4,93% de proteína y 19,50% de TS) y 43,7 % como PQ (3,95% de grasa, 3,92% de proteína y 13,7% de TS). En contraste, el 41,8% de las muestras de leche de vaca se clasificaron como N (3,64% grasa, 3,37% proteína, 12,42% TS); 16,9% como HQ (5,46% de grasa, 4,01% de proteína y 14,82% de TS) y 41,2% como PQ (2,71% grasa, 3,08% proteína y 10,6% TS). Los modelos discriminantes para el búfalo de agua y la leche de vaca fueron capaces de clasificar la leche en los grupos N y PQ con una precisión >90% y en el grupo HQ con >85% de precisión.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) is an acid-fast, gram-positive bacillus. MAP is the causal agent of paratuberculosis (PTB) or Johne's disease, an infectious disease affecting domestic ruminants and some wild species. Its importance as a potentially zoonotic agent due to its relation to Crohn's disease (CD) in humans is still under debate and investigation. The aim of the present systematic review is to summarize original studies on MAP carried out in Colombia since 1924, as well as to establish strengths, weaknesses, and future research opportunities in the country with emphasis on diagnosis and epidemiology. The initial search for existing publications reporting original studies on MAP, PTB, and the relationship between MAP and CD was carried out in the available databases and national libraries. After compilation of the available studies (n = 20), the relevant data was extracted (year, province of report, species studied, diagnostic tests used, study design, summary of results, and authors). Recommendations for future research opportunities on MAP in Colombia are made.


Resumen Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) es un bacilo ácido resistente, gram-positivo. MAP es el agente causal de la paratuberculosis (PTB) o enfermedad de Johne, una enfermedad infecciosa que afecta rumiantes domésticos y algunas especies salvajes. Su importancia como agente zoonótico, debido a su relación con la enfermedad de Crohn (CD) en humanos, está aún en debate y bajo investigación. El objetivo de la presente revisión es exponer los estudios originales sobre MAP llevados a cabo en Colombia desde 1924, así como establecer sus fortalezas, debilidades y oportunidades de investigación futura, con énfasis en los puntos de vista diagnóstico y epidemiológico. La búsqueda inicial de las publicaciones existentes sobre estudios originales realizados acerca de MAP, PTB y la relación MAP y CD fue realizada en las bases de datos disponibles y en bibliotecas nacionales. Luego de la compilación de los estudios disponibles (n = 20), los datos relevantes fueron extraídos (año, provincia de reporte, especie estudiada, prueba diagnóstica usada, diseño del estudio, resumen de resultados y autores). Se hacen recomendaciones para futuras investigaciónes de MAP en Colombia.

O objetivo desta revisão é apresentar a estudos mapa original realizado na Colômbia desde 1924, e estabelecer pontos fortes, pontos fracos e oportunidades para futuras pesquisas no país com ênfase no diagnóstico e epidemiológico pontos de vista. A busca inicial da literatura sobre estudos originais sobre MAP, PTB e a relação MAP e CD foi feita nas bases de dados disponíveis e bibliotecas nacionais. Após a compilação dos estudos disponíveis (n = 20), os dados relevantes foram extraídos (ano, relatório província, espécies estudadas, teste de diagnóstico utilizado, desenho do estudo, os resultados resumo e autores). Foram feitas recomendações sobre futuras oportunidades de pesquisa em MAP em Colômbia.

Polisserosites são alterações inflamatórias das serosas viscerais e parietais das cavidades corpóreas. Um tipo especial destas alterações foi identificado em bubalinos abatidos para consumo nos anos 80, sendo associada a infecção por Chlamydia psittaci. Apesar da importância da bubalinocultura no Pará, do caráter zoonótico da C. psittaci e da possibilidade de envolvimento de outros agentes na afecção, são raros trabalhos sobre a enfermidade desde os estudos pioneiros. No presente trabalho casos identificados como polisserosite pelo serviço de inspeção sanitária em búfalos abatidos para consumo foram coletados com objetivo de determinar a frequência e origem dos mesmos e de caracterizar as lesões e pesquisar antígenos de Chlamydia spp. nas mesmas. De um total de 2.887 bubalinos abatidos no período de estudo foram identificados 48 (1,66%) casos. O município de Santa Cruz do Arari na Ilha de Marajó apresentou a maior porcentagem de casos em relação ao número de animais abatidos (6,49%, 5/77). Na macroscopia as lesões se caracterizaram por áreas opacas, branco-amareladas de espessamento das serosas, por vezes com franjas fibrosas na superfície. Os resultados permitem concluir que os casos classificados como polisserosite pelos veterinários da inspeção sanitária nos búfalos abatidos para consumo correspondem na histopatologia a um tipo incomum de polisserosite, caracterizada por infiltrado linfocitário, com ocasionais formações de folículos linfoides terciários ou ectópicos. Foi observado ainda nestas lesões um predomínio de linfócitos T (CD3 positivos) no infiltrado, sendo os linfócitos B (CD79 positivos) presentes em maior número no interior das estruturas foliculares. Não foram demonstrados antígenos de clamídias nas lesões do presente estudo, o que demonstra a necessidade de estudos adicionais relativos a(s) etiologia(s) das lesões.(AU)


Polyserositis are inflammatory changes of the visceral and parietal serous of body cavities. A special type of polyserositis was identified in buffaloes in the 80s, being associated with infection by Chlamydia psittaci. Since these pioneering studies, there are no additional works about the condition. Considering the importance of buffalo in Pará, the zoonotic character of C. psittaci and the possibility of involvement of other agents in polyserositis in buffaloes the present study is proposed. We collected cases identified as polyserositis by sanitary inspection service in buffalo slaughtered for consumption in Belem for a complementary characterization of inflammatory cell and the research of Chlamydia spp antigens in lesions. Of 2.887 buffaloes slaughtered in a period of six months, there were 48 (1.66%) cases of polyserositis and 39 analyzed. Santa Cruz do Arari in Marajó Island was the city with the highest frequency of cases, whereas 6.49% of buffaloes had lesions. However, 50% of the present study cases came from Soure municipality in Marajó Island, which provided about 49% of buffaloes slaughtered in the period. In the macroscopy, there were opaque areas with white-yellow thickening of the serous, sometimes with fibrous fringes on the surface. Histopathology showed connective tissue projections partially lined by cuboid or flattened mesothelial cells. Often in projections there were mononuclear infiltrate of variable intensity, consisting mainly of lymphoid cells, with occasional ectopic or tertiary lymphoid follicles.(AU)

SUMMARY: The present study was undertaken to elucidate ultrastructural changes in development of parotid salivary gland of buffalo during different stages of prenatal life. The ultrastructural studies revealed that the cytoplasm of acinar cells was filled with mitochondria, rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complex in mid and late foetal age groups. Medium electron dense secretory granules first appeared in the acinar cells of parotid gland at 30 cm CVRL (141st day). However, at 49.5 cm CVRL (185th day) two types of electron dense granules were identified on basis of granule density viz., dark and light. The dark electron dense granules were more in number, whereas light granules were comparatively less having electron lucent content within them was identified. The mean diameter of dark and light granules was measured about 0.45±0.1 µm and 0.30±0.1 µm, respectively, which showed that the dark granules were comparatively larger in size. The secretory granules were increased in number during the late foetal age group. The myoepithelial cells were located at the base of the acinar cells as well as intercalated and striated ducts, and were stellate in shape. The ultrastructure of myoepithelial cell revealed parallel stream of myofilaments in the cytoplasm and its processes. Lipofuscin pigments were also observed in between the acinar cells of parotid gland.


RESUMEN: El estudio se realizó para elucidar los cambios ultraestructurales en el desarrollo de la parótida del búfalo durante las diferentes etapas de la vida prenatal. Los estudios ultraestructurales revelaron que el citoplasma de las células acinares estaba saturado de mitocondrias, de retículo endoplasmático rugoso y Complexo golgiensis en las edades fetal media y tardía. Se observó un número mayor de gránulos oscuros densos de electrones, mientras que los gránulos ligeros fueron comparativamente menor en número con contenido de electrones. El diámetro medio de gránulos oscuros y ligeros se midió aproximadamente 0,45 / pm 0,1 / mu m y 0,30 / pm 0,1 / mu m, respectivamente, lo que mostró que los gránulos oscuros eran comparativamente mayores en tamaño. Los gránulos secretores aumentaron en número durante el último grupo de edad fetal. Las células mioepiteliales se localizaron en la base de las células acinares, así como en conductos intercalados y estriados, y tenían una forma estrellada. La ultraestructura de las células mioepiteliales reveló una corriente paralela de miofilamentos en el citoplasma y sus procesos. También se observaron pigmentos de lipofuscina entre las células acinares de la glándula parótida.

ABSTRACT

Mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary gland that affects dairy cattle worldwide causing economic losses. Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) are the predominant cause of this type of infection. We have recently showed that coagulase-positive staphylococci could be misidentified. So, the aim of this study was to characterize the Staphylococcus spp. strains initially classified as coagulase-negative Staphylococci, isolated from buffalo with subclinical mastitis. Milk of buffaloes with mastitis in herds was collected and 9 strains were identified as CNS by phenotypic tests. Molecular methodologies latter identified the strains as coagulase-negative Staphylococcus chromogenes (5), coagulase-positive Staphylococcus hyicus (2) and coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus (2). Our results strongly support the need to identify the isolates to a species level in order to avoid misidentification and to be aware of the classification using the coagulase test alone.(AU)


A mastite é uma inflamação da glândula mamária que afeta o gado leiteiro em todo o mundo, causando perdas econômicas. Staphylococcus coagulase-negativa (SCN) são a causa predominante desse tipo de infecção. Mostrou-se recentemente que Staphylococcus coagulase-positiva podem ser identificados erroneamente. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar cepas de Staphylococcus spp. inicialmente classificados como Staphylococcus coagulase-negativa, isolados de búfalas com mastite subclínica. O leite de búfalas com mastite foi coletado, e nove cepas foram identificadas como SCN por testes fenotípicos. Metodologias moleculares identificaram as cepas como Staphylococcus chromogenes coagulase-negativa (5) Staphylococcus hyicus coagulase-positiva (2) e Staphylococcus aureus coagulase-positiva (2). Os resultados reforçam a necessidade de identificar as cepas em termos de espécie, a fim de se evitarem erros de identificação e estar atento à classificação utilizando o teste de coagulase sozinho.(AU)

ABSTRACT

La actividad antibacteriana de los sueros de bovino y de búfalo fue evaluada in vitro de manera indirecta con dos reacciones de inmunohemólisis: (i) un ensayo de hemólisis-hemoaglutinación sobre eritrocitos no sensibilizados de conejo y (ii) un ensayo de cinética de eritrocitos no sensibilizados de conejo frente a concentraciones crecientes de suero. La actividad bactericida de los sueros fue evaluada in vitro cuantificando la reducción de desarrollo de un inóculo de Escherichia coli en medio de cultivo enriquecido con suero de ambas especies. En el ensayo de hemólisis-hemoaglutinación, la hemólisis máxima se observó hasta la dilución 1:16 del suero de ambas especies. El mayor porcentaje de hemólisis se obtuvo con el suero de búfalo (84,7 ± 9,71%) respecto del suero bovino (71,0 ± 5,05%). Sin embargo no se hallaron diferencias en las diluciones de suero necesarias para obtener el 50% de la hemólisis total, siendo estas de 10,2 ± 2,48 para el suero de bovinos y de 11,8 ± 2,18 para el suero de búfalo. El suero de búfalo redujo el desarrollo bacteriano en un 69,8% respecto del 47,2% obtenido por el suero de bovino. No obstante estos resultados, se necesitarán estudios adicionales para corroborar estos hallazgos in vivo.


The antibacterial activity of serum of bovine and buffaloes was evaluated in vitro indirectly by two immunohemolysis assays: (i) an unsensitized rabbit blood cells hemolysis-hemagglutination assay and (ii) and a hemolytic-kinetic of unsensitized rabbit blood cells in function of increasing serum concentrations. The serum bactericidal activity was evaluated in vitro by quantifying the reduction of the development of an Escherichia coli inoculum in a culture medium enriched with serum of both species. In the hemolysis-hemagglutination assay, the máximum haemolysis was observed until a 1:16 serum dilution for both species. The highest percentage of hemolysis was obtained with buffalo serum (84.7 ± 9.71%) with respect to bovine serum (71.0 ± 5.05%). However, no differences were found in the serum dilutions necessary to obtain 50% of the total hemolysis, being these 10.2 ± 2.48 for the serum of cattle and 11.8 ± 2.18 for the serum of buffalo. Buffalo serum reduced bacterial growth by 69.8% compared to 47.2% obtained by bovine serum. Despite these results, additional studies will be needed to corroborate these findings in vivo.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to establish the biochemical parameters of the abaxial wall, dorsal wall and sole of the hoof of the medial thoracic, lateral, and medial pelvic digits of buffalos. The hoof samples were subjected to destructive biochemical analyses to identify the dry material (DM), mineral matter (MM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP) and ether extract (EE) contents. Sulfur (S), calcium (Ca), potassium (K), phosphorus (P), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) levels were determined based on nondestructive biochemical analyses. The parameters of dry material, mineral matter, organic matter, crude protein and ether extract of hoof capsule of the digits of buffalos can be determined by means of both destructive and nondestructive biochemical analysis. In addition, this study revealed that the highest concentrations of DM, CP and minerals such as, K, Zn and Cu are concentrated in the digits that bear the greatest body mass weight, suggesting that there is a positive correlation between the aforementioned parameters and the strength and growth of the hoof capsule in the digits. As for the element S, this study demonstrated that its highest concentration is located in the lateral digits of the pelvic members.(AU)


O presente estudo objetivou estabelecer os parâmetros bioquímicos da muralha abaxial, muralha dorsal e sola do casco dos dígitos torácico medial e pélvico lateral dos bubalinos. Foram realizadas analises bioquímicas destrutivas das amostras dos cascos para se obterem os teores de matéria seca (MS), matéria mineral (MM), matéria orgânica (MO), proteína bruta (PB) e extrato etéreo (EE). As análises bioquímicas não destrutivas foram empregadas para se avaliarem os níveis de enxofre (S), cálcio (Ca), potássio (K), fósforo (P), zinco (Zn) e cobre (Cu). Concluiu-se que os parâmetros matéria seca, matéria mineral, matéria orgânica, proteína bruta e extrato etéreo do estojo córneo dos dígitos de bubalinos podem ser definidos por análises bioquímicas destrutivas e não destrutivas. Os maiores valores dos elementos minerais estão concentrados nos dígitos que suportam o maior peso do animal, sugerindo que existe uma relação positiva entre esses parâmetros. Além disso, este estudo revelou que as maiores concentrações de MS, PB e minerais como, K, Zn e Cu estão nos dígitos que carregam o maior peso de massa corporal, o que indica que há uma correlação positiva entre os parâmetros acima referidos, resistência e crescimento do estojo córneo dos dígitos. Em relação ao elemento de S, este estudo demonstrou que a sua maior concentração situa-se nos dígitos laterais dos membros pélvicos.(AU)

Fourteen vomeronasal organs (VNOs) of adult males one-humped camels (Camelus dromedarius) and Egyptian water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) (n=7/each) were examined immunohistochemically with neuronal markers; synaptophysin (SYP) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) to clarify the distribution of the vomeronasal (VN) receptor cells and nerve fibers, in addition to elucidate the existence of non-neuronal elements via S-100 and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). In both animals, the VNO was lined medially with VN sensory (olfactory) epithelium and non-sensory (respiratory) epithelium laterally. Immunohistochemically, both animals showed SYP immunolabeling only in the receptor cells of VN sensory epithelium while GFAP labeled the ensheathing cells of the nerve fibers of VNOs. Both S-100 and eNOS labeled non-neuronal elements of the VNO; the supporting cells of sensory epithelium and the VN glands. In view of these observations, we postulate that the VNOs of both animals contain various cells populations that express several neuronal and non-neuronal markers. As well as, SYP and GFAP are suggested as markers for receptor cells and ensheathing cells of nerves of the VNOs respectively. However, no clear differences can be detected in the expressions of neuronal and non-neuronal markers in VNOs of camel and buffalo since they are ruminant species.


En este estudio fueron examinados 14 órganos vomeronasales (OVN) de machos adultos de camellos de una joroba (Camelus dromedarius) y búfalos egipcios de agua (Bubalus bubalis) (n = 7 / cada uno) por inmunohistoquímica con marcadores neuronales, sinaptofisina (SIP) y proteína ácida fibrilar glial (PAFG), para identificar la distribución vomeronasal (VN) del receptor de células y fibras nerviosas, además de dilucidar la existencia de elementos no neuronales a través de S-100 y óxido nítrico sintasa endotelial (ONSe). En ambos animales, el OVN se encuentra alineado en sentido medial con el epitelio sensorial (olfato) y lateralmente con el epitelio no sensorial (respiratorio). En el estudio inmunohistoquímico, ambos animales mostraron marcadores inmunológicos solamente en las células receptoras del epitelio sensorial VN, mientras que la proteína ácida fibrilar glial marcaba las fibras nerviosas de OVN. Tanto el S-100 como la óxido nítrico sintasa endotelial, marcaron elementos no neuronales del OVN, las células de revestimiento del epitelio sensorial y las glándulas VN. En relación a estas observaciones, se postula que los OVN de ambos animales contienen células que expresan varios marcadores neuronales y no neuronales. SIP y la PAFG se sugieren como marcadores para células receptoras y las células gliales de nervios del OVN, respectivamente. Sin embargo, debido a que son especies de rumiantes, no existen diferencias claras que se puedan detectar en las expresiones de los marcadores neuronales y no neuronales en el OVN de camello y búfalo.

ABSTRACT

The present study was conducted on six healthy early neonatal and six prepubertal buffalo calves to study the location, gross morphology, histomorphology and histochemistry of lymphoglandular complexes in proximal colon. In very proximal part of colon of buffalo calves, an irregular oval mucosal lymphoid patch was found grossly as a proximal colon (PC) patch. Histologically, in proximal colon patch of early neonates (3-4 weeks), an extensive invasion of mucosal glands was observed towards lymphoid nodules that were present in submucosa. The structure as a whole thus formed a complex known as lymphoglandular complex (LGC). Large number of such complexes i.e., LGCs were observed in submucosa of proximal colon at this age. At some places, invasion of mucosal glands into lymphoid tissue was restricted to superficial layer of complexes, with the lymphoglandular complexes opening directly into the lumen but some were deep seated. However, by the age of 6 months in buffalo calves i.e., prepubertal period, LGCs were reduced and were present in single layer within the submucosa of the proximal colon. Moreover, some of LGCs were completely encapsulated by their own lamina muscularis mucosae. But some of the complexes still had their mucosal openings into lumen while others had lost their connection with tunica mucosa. Histochemically, the glands that were observed within LGCs contained mucosubstances, glycogen, mucopolysaccharides, and mucin. However, lipids were present around the lymphocytes observed towards the periphery of these LGCs.


El presente estudio se llevó a cabo en seis terneros de búfalo neonatos sanos y seis terneros prepuberales para estudiar la ubicación, morfología macroscópica, histomorfología e histoquímica de los complejos linfoglandulares en el colon proximal. Se observó en un área del colon proximal (AP) de los terneros de búfalo un óvalo linfoide de mucosa irregular en la parte más proximal de éste. Histológicamente, en el área proximal del colon de los terneros neonatos (3-4 semanas), se observó una invasión extensa de las glándulas mucosas hacia los nódulos linfáticos presentes en la submucosa. La estructura en su totalidad formaba un complejo conocido como complejo linfoglandular (CLG). A esta edad se observó un gran número de estos complejos es decir, se observaron CLGs en la submucosa del colon proximal. La invasión de las glándulas mucosas en el tejido linfoide, se limita a la capa superficial de los complejos, los complejos linfoglandulares distribuidos directamente en el lumen, sin embargo otros se encontraban arraigados de manera profunda. En búfalo a los 6 meses de edad, es decir en el período prepuberal, se observó un número reducido de CLGs presentes en una sola capa dentro de la submucosa del colon proximal. Por otra parte, algunos de CLGs estaban completamente encapsulados por su propia lamina muscularis mucosae. Algunos de los complejos mantenían abertura de las mucosas en el lumen, mientras que otros habían perdido su conexión con la mucosa. En análisis histoquímico, las glándulas que se observaron dentro del CLGs contenían mucosustancias, glucógeno, mucopolisacáridos y mucina. Sin embargo, se encontraron lípidos presentes alrededor de los linfocitos hacia la periferia de los CLGs.

ABSTRACT

This paper aimed to evaluate the surface temperatures of buffalo bulls using infrared thermography, considering four distinct anatomical parts over time, and to correlate surface temperatures and thermal comfort indexes. The humid tropical climate (Kõppen's Afi) was predominant in the research station where the experiment was performed and the trial lasted from April to August. Ten bulls (n=10) were evaluated every 25 days (morning: 6:00-9:00; afternoon: 12:00-15:00) and the parameters assessed were respiratory rate (RR), rectal temperature (RT), and the thermograms of surface temperature for orbital area (ORB), right flank (RF), left flank (LF) and scrotum (SCR). Climatological data was continuously monitored and the Temperature and Humidity Index (THI) and the Index of Comfort of Benezra (ICB) were calculated. The average values of THI were ≥78, and significant differences between shifts were observed (P<0.05). The ICB ranged from 1.96 to 2.25 and significant differences were observed for shifts and throughout the months (P<0.05). The averages of surface temperatures were RT=38.2±0.5°C, ORB=36.1±0.8°C, LF=33.5±2.5°C, RF=35.4±1.7ºC and SCR=33.3±1.1°C, which exhibited significant differences for shifts and throughout the months (P<0.05). Positive correlations were obtained between THI and ORB (0.72), RF (0.77), LF (0.75) and SCR (0.41) (P<0.0001). The maximum temperature of ORB showed the highest correlation with RT (0.58, P<0.0001). Therefore, the surface temperatures are subject to climatic variations and increase throughout the day, due to the variation in thermal comfort indexes, and the maximum ORB temperature was the parameter most related to rectal temperature. Lastly, the results indicate that IRT may be a useful non-invasive and accurate tool to detect the variations in ORB, LF, RF and SCR temperature in buffalo bulls.


O presente trabalho visou avaliar as temperaturas superficiais de diferentes regiões anatômicas de búfalos ao longo do tempo, por meio da termografia infravermelha, e correlacioná-las a índices bioclimatológicos de conforto térmico. O ensaio foi realizado em região de clima tropical úmido (Afi de Kõppen), de abril a agosto. Dez touros (n=10) foram avaliados a cada 25 dias (manhã: seis-nove horas; tarde: 12-15h), quanto à frequência respiratória (FR), temperatura retal (TR) e imagens termográficas da órbita ocular (ORB), flanco direito (FLd), flanco esquerdo (FLe) e escroto (ESC). Os dados climatológicos foram ininterruptamente monitorados, e calculados o índice de temperatura e umidade (ITU) e o índice de conforto de Benezra (ICB). O ITU foi ≥78, com diferença entre turnos (P<0,05). Já o ICB variou de 1,96 a 2,25 e apresentou diferenças ao longo dos meses e entre turnos (P<0,05). As temperaturas observadas foram de TR=38,2±0,5ºC, ORB=36,1±0,8ºC, FLd=33,5±2,5ºC, FLe=35,4±1,7ºC e ESC=33,3±1,1ºC, as quais variaram significativamente ao longo dos meses e entre turnos (P<0,05). O ITU apresentou correlações positivas com ORB (0,72), FLd (0,77), FLe (0,75) e ESC (0,41) (P<0,0001). A temperatura máxima de ORB apresentou a maior correlação com a TR (0,58; P<0,0001). Portanto, as temperaturas superficiais dos animais sofrem interferências das variações climáticas e se elevam ao longo do dia, devido à variação nos índices de conforto térmico; a temperatura máxima de ORB foi o parâmetro mais condicionado à temperatura retal. Também, as oscilações de temperatura de superfície de ORB, FLd, FLe e ESC podem ser aferidas em bubalinos com o uso da termografia infravermelha, de modo preciso e não invasivo.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to describe the surface structure of the lingual papillae in Anatolian Water Buffaloes using SEM. Six male Anatolian Water Buffaloes were used. Filiform, lentiform and conical papillae were determined three types as mechanical papillae. Fungiform and vallate papillae were observed two types as gustatory papillae on the tongue in Anatolian Water Buffalo. The filiform papillae were observed on the apex and body of the tongue, besides randomly identified lateral surface of the body. The conical papillae differed from the filiform papillae with its larger size and non existence of the secondary papillae. The fungiform papillae was round in shape and mushroom-like, scattering among the filiform papillae on the dorsal surface of the apex, body and the root of the tongue. The fungiform papillae's taste pores and creter-like structure were determined. The lentiform papillae were determined in two types. The borders of the cells and the micro-pitted appearance were defined at the lentiform papillae. In the vallate papillae bud fosse and a thick annular pad was found. These differences on the morphological structures of the lingual papillae were considered to be related to genetic diversity.


El objetivo de este estudio fue describir la estructura de la superficie de las papilas linguales en Búfalos de agua de Anatolia mediante microscopía electrónica de barrido (MEB). Se utilizaron seis Búfalos machos para el estudio. Se determinaron tres tipos de papilas mecánicas: filiformes, lenticular y cónicas. También se encontraron papilas gustativas de dos tipos: fungiformes y caliciformes. Las papilas filiformes se localizaron en el vértice y cuerpo de la lengua, además de encontrarse con una distribución al azar en la superficie lateral del cuerpo lingual. Las papilas cónicas se diferenciaron de las filiformes por su mayor tamaño y la ausencia de papilas secundarias. Las papilas fungiformes presentaban una forma redonda, similar a un hongo, con una distribución entre las papilas filiformes en la superficie dorsal del vértice, cuerpo y la raíz de la lengua. Además se observaron poros gustatorios en las papilas fungiformes con estructura similar de cráter. Las papilas lenticulares se determinaron en dos tipos. Se definieron los márgenes celulares y aspecto de micro corrosión en las papilas lenticulares. En las papilas circunvaladas se observaron brotes excavados y una almohadilla anular gruesa. Se consideró que estas diferencias en las estructuras morfológicas de las papilas linguales están relacionadas con la diversidad genética.

La infección de los búfalos de agua (Bubalus bubalis) con los virus de la diarrea viral bovina (BVDV) ha sido confirmada mediante técnicas serológicas y moleculares en trabajos anteriores. Con el fin de determinar la presencia de animales persistentemente infectados y las especies y subtipos circulantes de BVDV en esta especie animal se realizó un estudio sobre una manada de búfalos de producción mixta con ganado bovino (Bossp.). Nuestros resultados serológicos mostraron un alto nivel de positividad frente a BVDV-1 y BVDV-2 dentro de la manada de búfalos. El análisis molecular sobre muestras de sangre de los animales serológicamente negativos reveló la presencia de ácido nucleico viral, lo que confirma la existencia de búfalos persistentemente infectados. El clonado y la secuenciación de la región 5 'UTR de algunas de las muestras obtenidas de búfalo reveló la presencia de coinfección natural con al menos dos subtipos diferentes de BVDV (1a y 1b) y con las especies virales BVDV-1 y BVDV-2


Infection of water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) with bovine viral diarrhea viruses (BVDV) has been confirmed in several studies by serological and molecular techniques. In order to determine the presence of persistently infected animals and circulating species and subtypes of BVDV we conducted this study on a buffalo herd, whose habitat was shared with bovine cattle (Bossp.). Our serological results showed a high level of positivity for BVDV-1 and BVDV-2 within the buffalo herd. The molecular analyses of blood samples in serologically negative animals revealed the presence of viral nucleic acid, confirming the existence of persistent infection in the buffaloes. Cloning and sequencing of the 5' UTR of some of these samples revealed the presence of naturally mix-infected buffaloes with at least two different subtypes (1a and 1b), and also with both BVDV species (BVDV-1 and BVDV-2)
